About 1/12 of the coin is not gold, simply because 24k gold would be too soft to handle easily, and would bend, scratch, and dent. The Krugerrand was designed from the the start as an investment vehicle for gold bullion- not as a coin with a legal tender value stamped on it. The Rand Refinery supplies the 22k blanks to the South African Mint, who then stamp out what has become the gold standard in small gold investing, the Krugerrand.

The most obvious characteristics of a Krugerrand are of course what's stamped on it by the mint- on one side you have Boer resistance leader Paul Kruger. The other side has a Springbok antelope, a national symbol of South Africa. You can also find the coins are printed in English and Afrikaans. There are 140 reeds on the diameter of the coin (reeds are simply the little indentations you find on the perimeter of a coin)- however most people wouldn't count every one on a 1/4 gold Krugerrand!
