Krugerrand Sets and Lots
If you want to buy Krugerrand sets or lots it is in your best interest do some research first. To begin with, a little on what you should know before you buy a Krugerrand set. A typical Krugerrand, ie one in normal circulation, draws most of its value from the gold bullion content. The spot price for gold is the price for "immediate settlement". That means that buyer and seller agree to trade at that price, which is usually completed in a day or two. You can see the spot price for gold in the widget on the sidebar to the right.
When you buy Krugerrands, there is also a premium for "minting and handling". The premium varies depending on demand and the size of the Krugerrand. Typically the 1 oz gold Krugerrand has a lower premium, and the 1/10 oz gold Krugerrand will have a higher premium. You should keep this in mind, particularly when you're buying several of the fractional Krugerrands. Right now the premium for Krugerrands is running between 8% and 13%, depending on where you buy them. You can check the latest prices on eBay, and with several dealers here on Gold Krugerrand Ferret at Gold Krugerrand Price. Generally you'll see lower prices on eBay, however there is more risk of getting fake Krugerrand from an individual seller on eBay. A nice compromise is to buy from a gold dealer on eBay. See our article on how to "Buy Krugerrands on eBay" for hints and tips.
Armed with the knowledge of what they're worth, you can bid with confidence to buy Krugerrand sets at auction. Proof Krugerrands command a premium on top of the bullion content and fee charged for circulated, and uncirculated Krugerrands. Sold by the South African mint, they typically come with a presentation box, (the famed "red box"), and a numbered certificate of authenticity. Proof Krugerrands are made from specially polished blanks from the Rand Refinery, are hand loaded into the presses, and are double stamped to ensure they have the highest quality image. They have 220 reeds (indentations around the outside of the 1 oz Krugerrand) instead of the typical 180 on the circulated/uncirculated Krugers. In addition to this, a very limited number of proofs are produced. When you buy proof Krugerrand sets, you are going to pay a premium for the extra craftsmanship, as well as the rarity of the coin. Here are some mintage numbers for 1 oz proof Krugerrands, on anniversary dates, source: Gary Eggleston.
| Date | Anniversary | Mintage |
|---|---|---|
| 1977 | 10th | 8500 |
| 1987 | 20th | 12,650 of which 1650 have the GRC mint mark |
| 1997 | 30th | 2735 of which 1000 are 30th anniversary, 72 have the SS mint mark |
If you're buying Krugerrands to simply invest in gold, you're probably better off buying one of the coins released into normal circulation, as you will not have to pay the premium price. If, however, you've been bitten by the coin collecting bug and you're looking to make an investment in your collection as well as gold bullion, a carefully researched proof Krugerrand set might be just what the doctor ordered.
