Proof Gold Krugerrand
Should you buy a proof gold Krugerrand? What's so special about a proof? The South African mint first stamped out Krugerrands on gold blanks from the Rand Refinery in 1967. Both proof gold krugerrands and uncirculated coins were released- however it was hard the general public to tell which was a proof gold krugerrand and which was not because they both both had a mirror finish. This sent the mint back to the drawing board to find some way to differentiate a proof from the other coins. In 1968 they tried two variations- a frosted finish on one side, mirrored on the other, and a dual frosted finish. They also upgraded the number of reed (indentations along the diameter of a coin) from 180 to 220 on the proofs (an interesting sidenote on the reeds- in 1977 they produced a variation on the proof, one with 188 reeds). Like any gold coin, it is important to buy from a reputable seller. You can also look for certification paperwork from organizations like the South African Gold Coin Exchange (SAGCE) or the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), who also frequently seal proofs in protective plastic.
So what makes a proof special? "Proof" is not so much a grade applied to a standard coin, but a term to define coins that have had special treatment in their preparation. For example the proof gold krugerrand coin blanks are specially polished prior to striking. Areas of the presses may be sandblasted or polished depending upon the finish they are looking for on the final coin. The operators of the presses typically hand load the blanks. The blanks are struck twice (double struck) to give a perfect, more vivid image. They are typically certified, sealed in plastic alone or in gift sets, and sold to collectors, rather than gold investors.
